There are plenty of pizza places in the Greater Cleveland area, but in this neck of the woods coal-fired pies are a rare option. So when Ohio’s first Tony Sacco’s Coal Oven Pizza opens at noon Wednesday at Great Lakes Mall in Mentor, it’ll be an opportunity for pizza lovers to judge for themselves whether a different way of baking produces a pie to die for.
Saccos, a growing chain of pizza restaurants with locations throughout the Great Lakes states as well as in Florida and North Carolina, fuels their bake ovens with anthracite coal. Operators claim the fuel generates oven temperatures upwards of 1,000 degrees. That super-high heat produces pies more quickly with unique flavor and crusts that are crispy without overcooking the toppings.
The restaurant will sell pizzas in small (12-inch), large (16-inch) and kid-size for children 12 and under with either traditional toppings ($10.95 and up, plus $1.50 or $2.50 per additional topping) and specialty versions ($15.95 and up). Sacco’s also offers appetizers, several kinds of salads, sandwiches and desserts. Beer, wine and soft drinks are on the menu.
Happy hour specials (3 to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to closing, daily) start right away. They will include selected half-price appetizers and specials on wines and beers.
The 4,151-square-foot store on the west end of the mall, adjacent to Dillard’s South concourse, will also create a new entrance to the mall.
Opens Wednesday: Tony Sacco’s Coal Oven Pizza, Great Lakes Mall, 7850 Mentor Ave., Mentor (Dillard’s South concourse, suite 390), tonysaccos.com, 440-255-2625.
